The rainy days in Picton forced us to travel via ferry on the North Island. We spend 2 days in the Capital of New Zealand - Wellington with parliament, National Museum, Cable Car, Botanical Gardens and City Centre. We went on to Upper Hut and worked on a Woofing Farm with a lovely family for a week. This was one of the best things I have done in New Zealand. After some days you got the feeling being part of the family and you got the feeling of being home but not really being there ;) After 15000 km in a plane, 20000 km in my car and on the road for almost 7 month (sleeping in the car, tent, hc) I was really happy to have a base, a “normal” life for a couple of days. Than we went on traveling along the west coast of the North Island and stayed in a couple of places. Another story was the unintentional stopover in “Jerusalem”. We arrived in the village “Jerusalem” with a beautiful church and a convent of nuns in the middle of the Mountains. After a short look into the beautiful church Flo went back to the car and saw the tyre blow-out. He had the “not so good idea” ;) to drive the car up the hill on an unsealed road. He turned back the car a bit too much and got stuck on the meadow next to the road. There was no way out – not forward, not backward. I went back to the church and asked the nun for help. She called her sisters and they put us out with there 4 Wheel Drive. We changed the wheel and realized that somehow there was no pressure in the spare wheel! The nuns had no compressor and so we drove on in the middle of the mountains very slow to the next village where we found a local with a compressor. Puhh!! Arriving in Taupo there was no option (time, weather) for me anymore to walk the Tongario Crossing. I decided to hitchhike back to Christchurch. In a record time of 49 hours non stop hitchhike I arrived Christchurch pretty early and there was enough time left for souvenirs shopping. Due to bad airport-city connections I decided to sleep in the airport the night before my back flight to Sydney.
