One thing you may or may not know about is when people are hitchhiking they spend lots of time in petrol stations etc trying to get a lift out, and all people have their manditory black permanent marker pen. Look, this is the one I hugely recommend:

Hehe, but at the exit of these petrol stations hitchers leave messages for each other, descriptions of what they're up to, where they're heading for, and what their name is etc. Nice little posts that tell you a little about where you are and whats happening.
